This is how climate change affects your health

Climate change – even if still ignored by far too many – has received a lot of attention. I think we need to broaden our view and also talk about “health change” that’s a side-effect of the environmental crisis we live in.

One of the key reasons words that actions of even such remarkably brave and tireless climate change activists like Greta Thunberg don’t stick with the decision makers is that they often lack imagination. To be more precise, it can be hard to get concerned about vanishing rainforests on the other side of the world or repercussions of 2C higher temperature by the end of the century. We do shed a tear or two when we see burning koalas in Australia, but then we move on with our lives once the fires have been put out.

“Luckily” there are a lot of things we no longer need to imagine. Just open up our eyes for. Climate change is not only destroying our planet – it impacts our health too. We are drowning in toxins that we’ve created ourselves. For instance, we consume heavy metals present in the soil with vegetables and fruits we eat, we breath VOC fumes released by our mattresses, we pass on lead to our unborn babies when taking prenatal vitamins highly recommended by our obstetrician, we apply petroleum-derivatives present in beauty products on to our bodies, we inject ourselves with mercury that comes with the flu vaccine, our children suck on toys filled with phthalates and glued together with formaldehyde.

Environmental crisis is not only destroying our planet – it makes us sick too.

I’ve just scratched the surface here and will elaborate more in the posts to come. For now, I’ll leave you pondering this: have you ever asked yourself why cancer rates have been soaring unprecedentedly? Why babies are born with leukemia? Why autism has skyrocketed? Why gluten-intolerance? Why all the allergies? Instead of risking giving too simplified an answer I will round-up open-endedly: it’s hard to imagine that there is no link bewteen our lifestyle and our health.

Overwhelmed? You have all the right! That’s been my reaction too. The good news is that there a small non-toxicsteps we can all take towards clean living to substantially improve our well-being.
